Cease and Desist has brought us a long awaited line of single rings, double rings, pendants, and studs in Pewter. All items retail at under $24, and aside from all the gorgeous skulls, there are many other shapes to choose from.

Now that the holidays are over, and things have calmed down a bit, it's a good time to introduce you all to the General's new look. We are finishing up some small renovations, and much has changed in the past month or two. We have beautiful new wooden stages in the front and back of the store, for the display window and jewelry section.

This Brazen Design Saga Seed Ring by General 54 alumnus Rachel Dhawan gives a little pop of the hot color pallet without overwhelming. Made in sterling with real seeds, it's a great gift option, or a perfect personal splurge.

Kerri Westlake, Montreal-based creator of Westlake Designs, isn't letting this color trend pass her by either. Hand-knit toques, headbands, cowels, and pouches, 100% wool, in a variety of full bodied shades are cozy, chic, and on point for the colder days ahead.

Dagg & Stacey, the awesomely ethical fashion line from Toronto, is celebrating it's 10th year and we have some fabulous pieces from this most excellent Fall/Winter collection. We finally have all the gorgeous pieces from Jennifer Glasgow's Spring/Summer '11 Collection! Coral pinks and reds, soft grey bamboo and emerald green reign in this flatteringly feminine line up. I love how each item is impeccably defined with either frills, pleats, ruching, or folds, and the classy tie-dye accents are sheer (pun intended) brilliance! Here are some of my favourites, though we have plenty more in store.
You can't go wrong with the Helena dress, or it's shirt counterpart (and my namesake), the Rachel.

The Maerin dress is like something out of a fairytale with the tree-printed drapey pockets, and comes in a smashing emerald green to boot.

To celebrate the 50 + exhibitions they’ve curated in the past 5 years, Headquarters is proud to present “BFF” (Best Friends Forever), a retrospective look at all the amazing work and incredible talent that’s been showcased on their walls, this coming Friday January 14th from 6-11pm.

Started by Montreal Roller Derby founder Georgia W Tush, Neon Skates openned it's doors a few weeks ago, in the back room of the store and looks amazing! General 54 May Day Birthday Party

You can't fight getting older. And in the case of a boutique, there's really no reason to. No crows feet. No effects of gravity. Just a string of great memories and great people! And what better reason to throw a party.

General 54 is turning 4 years old. And in celebration, we are throwing our first annual May Day party, Saturday May 1st.

This is hopefully the beginning of a new tradition, holding as we do a particular fascination with May Day. In England, it's a day of semi-sanctioned mass unrest and the day of the worker... And then, there's the pagan side... a celebration of spring with May poles and all that (Jen is building some kind of streamer contraption). Traditionally, this is a day to go a little wild, and shake off any lingering effects of winter!

The fun starts at 9:30 with another G54 first: a fashion show. We've recruited various friends, writers, artists, and neighbourhood people to be the models. Our buddies Emily and Reeana have been building props and we can't wait to see what they come up with . Should be amazing! There will be clothes taken from the G54 designer collection along with some fun L23 vintage!

Then, the boogie times start with DJ's Roxy Moron, and Dan Laflèche with live visuals by VJ wunderkind Bearmod.

And it's all happening in the prerenovated site our latest store (still to be named) situated right next to G54 at 56 St-Viateur Ouest. Right now it's just a big empty space, so there's no clothes to mess up or art to damage.. so you can feel free to really let loose.

Stay up late!: Nuit Blanche

General 54 is participating for the first time in Montreal’s assault on the February blues, the all-night party known as “Nuit Blanche”, this year held Saturday February 27th.

Our “Nuit Blanche” event “What does not belong in a boutique” is a two parter starting at 7pm with a vernissage for Jeremy Gordaneer’s “Painting Small Things” series, a collections of 6”x8” paintings of objects like sparkplugs and metal fixtures. Later in the evening there will be a performance by Les Momies de Palerme, whose music has been described as “Vangelis on nightmare pills”. We are really looking forward to both!

As usual, there will be drinks, snacks, and other fun! More info below:

Jeremy Gordaneer: For many years the central focus in Gordaneers’s art has been exploring different ways to ground into being the idea of a continuum. The age old idea that everything is connected—that there is no space between any thing has been reinvigorated today by explorations into Quantum physics. He takes the traditional dichotomies of painting and sculpture, figure/ground, background/foreground, and subverts them in order to create an interesting new pictorial space more in keeping with the contemporary world. Beginning with painting, then moving towards a more three dimensional sculptoral approach, Gordaneer now often combines the two mediums. You may have encountered Camilla Ingr aka the Preservation Society at a past holiday artist fairs or dishing out goodies at her "bakery" underground vinyl shop Backroom Records and Pastries. She's been honing her canning chops for years... I bought about a dozen jars of her fantastic preserves last year for my whole family. Now we are selling them at the store! Camilla's got something for all tastes: sweet, sour, and spicy!! They are as tasty as they are innovative: Dilly carrots. Alright! "Sting" beans (green beans with a chili bite) Yes Please!! Here's some background to whet yr appetite:

Preservation Society is the result of Camilla Ingr's obsession with canning. A former pastry cook and sometimes musician, Ingr began canning over four years ago. A pastry school graduate, she has worked with Patrice Demers at the former Les Chevres and with Michelle Marek of Laloux, as well as interning at WD~50 in NYC. Her Sevile orange marmalade has been served at brunch-spot-du-jour Sparrow. And her preserves have been sold at hipster eatery Le Pick Up and now General 54!!! Preservation Society offers both traditional and more innovative preserves ranging from Dill Pickled Carrots (a cult favorite) to Caramel Apple Jam to Pink Grapefruit Marmalade, and that's just the beginning. Ingredients are local whenever possible and even sometimes handpicked. All preserves are free of any artificial ingredients-- jams, for instance, are made only with fruit, sugar and lemon juice. Heavy on the fruit, light on the sugar, people have been known to eat whole jars with a spoon, so watch out. 9$ and up

So - I really wish that I had gotten to posting this earlier, but I've been so busy getting ready for the Smart Design Mart that I haven't had time to write about the Smart Design Mart. Which is unfortunate because this artist market is the latest kid on the block and something I'm personally really excited by. This is what happens when a group of the nicest, most in touch, most talented designers and artisans you know get together and decide to start their own market - magic!!! Instead of the usual crowded corridors and mini-booths with only enuff room for a card table, they have rented a HUGE loft space and given everyone the opportunity to create their own "mini-boutique". There will be 54 artists in all, and instead of making an open call, they scouted all the participants personally. So expect to see tons of folks you've never seen before! Red Bird Studios at General 54

General 54 is very excited to host the very first group show
(outside the Red Bird itself) for Montreal's Red Bird Studios.

Red Bird is a artist run arts space in Montreal's Mile End district.
This exhibiton will showcase the work of this diverse group of
painters, sculptors, graphic designers and silk screeners, each one
exploring their individual practice and methodology within the material constraints of a 1' x 1' canvas board. more info below!

Thanks to our welder artist friend Thibourg, we are finally safe from the vile scumbags who've been repeatedly breaking into the store. The bad news: we have been broken into 3 times in the last year and we are sick and freaking tired of trudging out in the dead of night to clean up broken glass and scattered stock. But no more! The good news: we've just installed the most wicked metal gate ever to protect the front door. It's sort of 60's scrap metal commune meets art-nouveau and we are love love loving it. Who knew safety could be so good looking. Thanks Thibourg for taking a terrible situation and giving it artistic merit! And did we mention that we also now have a kick-ass burglar alarm (it went off by accident last week... and the police were there in minutes! They were none to pleased, but it was nice to know they actually do come). So whoever you are out there harshin our mellow by breakin in, STOP IT! We are armed to the teeth and are no longer depending on karma alone to keep us safe. So say we all!

General 54 Vernissage: Naomi Cook

Illustrator and Red Bird Galerist Naomi Cook will be hosting a vernissage at the General this Thursday night with drinks, and cake and such. The fun starts at 7pm.

In the coming months, Naomi will also be curating a series of theme shows starting in June with a Red Bird Galery group exhibit (Red Bird is a grouping of artist work spaces she founded and manages and which is home to some very interesting folks in the area).

We are changing the art at General 54 this week with exciting new works by collagist and Local 23 employee Jaynus O'Donnell.

The vernissage is this Thursday April 23rd (7pm onwards) which will also double as Jaynus' birthday party! Happy Birthday Ms Jaynus!

Here's a note she wrote about her work and this show:

I collect, read, look at, destroy and reconfigure children's pictorial encyclopedias in a pseudo-conscious analytic process. I use humour, absurdity, self-reflexivity and reconstruction to create bizarre, yet familiar worlds from images in the encyclopedias. This process creates tension between ways of transmitting and disseminating knowledge, particularly from visual sources; knowledge stemming from or used to create visual culture is shown to be constructed and dynamic with multiple and layered meaning, rather than static and absolute.

New screenprints and vernissage/shopping party

Just a note to let you all know about the vernissage coming up this Thursday.

As has become a seasonal tradition, Alice Jarry of Serigraphie Cinqunquatre is bringing in a new batch of her gorgeously layered archival screenprints. She has been part of every holiday art show since the store's inception. There is also new work by her studio-mate and fellow screenprinter Isabel Guimond and Mile-ender Jesse Purcell.

We're making the event into something of a holiday shopping party, with grog on hand and cake and other festive offerings. 7pm onwards Thursday December 11th.
