Artist Profile: Marie-Laure Plano of Lili Graffiti

 What do you create?
Lili Graffiti has two creative universes: childhood with the children's collection, (cupcakes, clouds, cushions), and the, "girly," universe with my accessories for women, (hats, berets, jewelry, scarves, pins).

Where does the name Lili Graffiti come from?
I'm in graphic design and was looking for an original and childlike name for my brand and for a name that would mostly be like me. "Lili" is for the childhood and "Graffiti" for my graphic expertise....

How long have you been designing in Montreal?
I arrived in Montreal in July 2010 following a family project and I envisioned my arrival in Montréal as an opportunity to reinvent my family life. My leisure activity has become my main activity now.

How do you handle rejection and critiques of your work?
I learned how to manage criticism. I have to admit it affects me, but I draw the necessary lessons to modify and improve my work.

What is your design goal for 2012?
My 2012 project is the creation of my website. I want to create a strong brand name. I also want to develop my perimeter of sales so I have to find a place in Montreal to produce larger quantities with local workers. In my work, I like the creation part, but less the production. Therefore, my next step is to outsource a part of my production. In terms of creation, I want to develop my collection of hats for women and children.

Did you always know you would become a designer?
I've always been immersed in a creative world. My mother was in design, and creativity has been part of my everyday life from a young age. I have a degree in architectural environment design, so I worked in the creation of furniture and then as a graphic designer in several advertising agencies, and then as a designer of accessories for women and children.

Who is your favorite Montreal designer?
I'm a fan of the work of the hat designer Lucie Gregoire.
